Can Consistent Truck Maintenance Keep You Safer?

If you are new to the trucking industry and have recently been hired as a truck driver in New York, you may have already begun making a list of actions you can take to protect yourself while driving. Your vigilance, responsibility and commitment to safety can significantly reduce the risks that you are involved in a serious accident. In fact, one of the most important things you can do is to be proactive about performing regular maintenance checks on your big rig. Guaranteeing that everything is working properly and is well-equipped for optimal road performance can prevent unnecessary problems which could dangerously compromise your own safety if your truck starts malfunctioning.

According to Job Monkey, there are some primary components that you should pay extra attention to when you are completing a routine maintenance checklist before embarking on a long drive. These include the following:

  • Tire pressure: When you check your tires, you should make sure that pressure readings are accurate for the brand of tire you have. Keep in mind that driving at high speeds, in different terrains, in fluctuating temperatures and for extended periods of time can all cause your tires to lose air. Tires with bad pressure readings may be more prone to damage and can also make steering more difficult.
  • Oil: Checking your oil can alert you to potential problems in relation to the health of your truck’s engine. Dirty oil not only compromises the performance of your truck, but it can damage the engine resulting in costly repairs.
  • Brakes: If you hear high-pitched squealing or feel unsettling vibrations while braking, it is an indicator that your brakes need a checkup. Addressing the problem immediately is critical to keep you and other motorists safe from the potential of brake failure. Because you use your brakes constantly, it is imperative that you check them often.
