Bus Accident Leaves Three Dead

On Monday, September 25, around 6:15 a.m. there was a motor vehicle accident involving two buses that resulted in three deaths and many others injured. The accident took place at the intersection of Main Street and Northern Boulevard in Flushing, Queens. According to reports, a Dahlia Travel charter bus went through a red light at 58 miles per hour and crashed into a New York City bus.

According to published reports, the driver of the Dahlia Travel charter bus, Raymond Mong, had been involved in prior bus accidents. In 2016, Mr. Mong went through a red light striking Laurence Torres on College Point Boulevard. Prior to that, Mr. Mong received 18 months probation after he was convicted of driving under the influence after fleeing the scene of a three-car accident on Interstate 95. At that time, Mr. Mong was employed by the MTA, which later fired him.

Currently, there are no standards for how many infractions a driver may receive until his or her commercial driver’s license is permanently revoked. According to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), Dahlia Travel violated state law when the charter bus company failed to inform New York State that Mr. Mong was a driver for them. According to reports, Mr. Mong was no longer on probation when Dahlia Travel employed him. However, many people are now questioning industry standards and hiring practices.
